Alice Smith Elementary is a K-5 school within the Hopkins Public Schools District, located in the city of Hopkins. Last year, we served about 500 amazing students and their families. Alice Smith is a neighborhood school with a strong community where all families are valued. Our school offers weekly exploration and outdoor education classes, inquiry-based learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) specialist classes, integrated Spanish language learning, a Spanish immersion option, and a focus on relationships, community, and unlocking each child's unique strengths.

What Makes Alice Smith Unique?

Juntos Spanish Immersion

The Juntos Spanish Immersion program at Alice Smith Elementary brings together scholars who speak Spanish, English, or another language at home and provides them the opportunity to develop proficiency in a second language during their elementary years.

In kindergarten, 90% of instruction is in Spanish, and 10% is in English. Scholars will learn to read and write in Spanish first, with English literacy instruction increased gradually over time. Research shows that developing literacy skills in two languages strengthens proficiency in both languages.

Juntos scholars can continue their Spanish immersion journey at North Middle School and Hopkins High School, where they can earn up to 16 college credits for advanced Spanish coursework.

At Alice Smith, we continually strive to be authentically inclusive — a core value of our Hopkins school community. For us, inclusion is not just an ideal, but a daily practice reflected in how we learn, celebrate, and grow together.

We live out this value by centering student voice, fostering a sense of belonging, and creating space for every child to be seen, heard, and valued. Our classrooms reflect the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of our community, and we intentionally honor the heritage, traditions, and lived experiences that each student brings.

More than 30% of Alice Smith students are bilingual and speak a language other than English at home. We see this as a strength and an asset that enriches our entire school community. Whether through multicultural events, bilingual books and resources, or opportunities for students to share their stories and traditions, we celebrate the many ways our students and families contribute to a vibrant, inclusive school culture.

STEAM Programming and Innovation

At Alice Smith, students engage in hands-on learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). Through dynamic, project-based experiences, they develop the skills to think critically, solve problems creatively, and collaborate effectively.

Our Makerspace and Innovation Labs provide exciting opportunities for exploration and discovery. Equipped with 3D printers, a green screen studio, and flexible small-group workspaces, these spaces empower students to bring their ideas to life. From engineering challenges and robotics to coding, gardening, and video production, students dive into the design process while building real-world skills they’ll carry with them far beyond the classroom.
