Alice Smith Multilingual Learners show their creativity in an ESTEEM showcase

Alice Smith Multilingual Learners in grades 1-4 were able to showcase what they learned and created in a special ESTEEM museum showcase last Thursday. ESTEEM is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) and SEL-based literacy model that allows multilingual students to develop their English language skills along with their content literacy, resulting in authentic learning, curiosity, and creativity.

“It is important to us that we teach the English language (listening, speaking, reading and writing) through content-based activities so that students are building academic language that will benefit them in their other classes,” said elementary ML teacher Holly Wick.

Using an engineer and artistic mindset, students researched innovation and creativity. They learned about springs and that the invention of a slinky was initially a mistake. At the end of the unit, they transferred their learning and built their own Rube Goldberg Machines using simple machines and the Engineering Design Process.
